September -October
I would like to welcome everyone back to the world of physical education. The students in Grades 3-5 will be starting off the year participating in a Team Challenges/Games Unit. Lifetime skills such as cooperation and teamwork are emphasized. Students will learn how individual efforts combine to help the team accomplish goals. It will give students the opportunity to work together, struggle, deal with failure, and master the problems set before them. Successful team building includes listening, encouraging, praising, receiving praise and speaking clearly. Team building also provides a positive self-concept, learning different roles, developing team communication, decision making, and learning by taking risks. The students will participate in the following challenges: Ball Carry, Cooperative Maze Game, Island Escape, Save the Lake, Giant's Gold, Beach balls in a Bag, and Team Dodge-bowl.
Grades K-2 will be in an Equipment Safety & Cooperative Activities Unit. They will be learning through different activities to demonstrate the safe and appropriate use of equipment (for example scooter safety). Also, they will learn to demonstrate an understanding of moving safely in general space and cooperatively working together.
Please make sure that your child is prepared for physical activity on their scheduled physical education days. Please look for your child’s class to see what letter days they have physical education.

October-November
The students in grades 3-5 will be participating in a Flag Football Unit. The focus of the unit is to learn basic football skills such as passing and receiving as well as basic relationships within football. They will learn the positions of the quarterback, receiver, and center. They will also learn about the basic concepts, scoring, and rules of football. For example, what is the line of scrimmage and how many points a touchdown is worth. Towards the end of the unit, the students will play in 4 vs. 4 games.
The students in grades K-2 will be participating in scooter activities/games unit. Participating in scooter games/activities gives children an opportunity to engage in beneficial play. Propelling a small board on wheels and controlling the speed and direction are exciting and great fun.
With many scooter games, the focus can be on teamwork, sportsmanship, and activities that isolate specific muscle groups to increase the strength of each child. A few of my favorite activities are scooter basketball, scooter scramble, and scooter relays. These games are exciting to watch and fun to play. Children leave the gym talking about their experiences and expressing enthusiasm for playing more scooter games.
